I thought I’d do something a little bit different today instead of my usual recipe blogging and do a short review of my 4 favourite cookbooks. I have quite a good collection of cookbooks now (not as many as my Mum, she’s got well over 100) I could read them all day long! Although I’ve started collecting quite a few, I do always find myself going to back to the same ones for inspiration/recipes. So, here’s a little review of my favourite ones..
4. The Flavour Thesaurus – Niki Segnit
So, this one is less of a cookbook, more of a guide. I love it. I got this book for Christmas last year from my Mum as an unexpected gift. It’s a really useful book to have if you’re quite creative with your cooking, but not always sure what will work with each other. Inside, it’s easy to find the ingredient you’re looking for, and underneath the wanted ingredient it’ll list that ingredient with the other things that work well with it. I just find this book so useful when I’m trying to think of something a bit more special to make because it shows me ways I can experiment with the flavours in my food! I also find this book really useful for cupcake ideas. This was my main source of ideas for when I made the cakes for my Mum’s wedding, it made finding flavours that would work together really easy. A definite must have for creative cooks!
3. Hairy Bikers’ Great Curries.
I love, love, love the Hairy Bikers! Their recipes always look fantastic and the cooking style that they use always seems to be easy and relaxed. Their food just always seems like real comfort food, and food that you would actually cook at home. I do love a bit of fancy food every now and then, but I do think when it comes to cooking at home, simple, wholesome and tasty is the way to go! I didn’t know this book existed until I went to my Mum’s house for Easter. She told me that she would be cooking curries from this book and making a feast. Although I do love the Hairy Bikers, I was a little sceptical at how authentic the food from this book would taste, because obviously, they’re not the first two people who spring to mind when you think of a good curry! I was very wrong to be sceptical though! The food cooked from the recipes in this book was amazing. Without any doubt the curry tasted as good as any curry you could get in an Indian takeaway, and far healthier! I was so surprised how simple the recipes were for such delicious food. If you’re into your curries and fancy making some at home, I would definitely get this book! It’s also a bargain in most shops for £10!
2. Jamie Oliver’s 30 Minute Meals.
One of the best books I own. I’ve been a fan of Jamie Olivers’ for ages now. I remember watching the Naked Chef on the telly with my Mum when I was younger and we’ve even had the chance to go to restaurant Fifteen when we’ve been to London. I got this book a while ago now, and it is by far one of my most used cookbooks. For me, most of the time, the meals do take longer than 30 minutes, but it doesn’t bother me too much. The recipes are still quick and easy ones to follow, with lovely results at then end. Unlike many cookbooks, this one seems to have a lot of really good recipes. I know that sounds a bit stupid but, usually in cookbooks you find maybe 1 or 2 really good recipes that you’d like to try, and you end up ignoring the rest. I found with 30 minutes meals, there was only a few I don’t want to cook! I’ve tried plenty of recipes out of this book now and I’ve not had one bad one yet! Jools’ Pregnant Pasta (called sausage pasta in my house) has become a weekly staple! This book is a must have if you work a lot like me, and want quick, tasty meals in a hurry!
1. Stewed – Alan Rosenthal
You need this book in your life. This is honestly by far the best book I have ever owned. This is the perfect cook book for me, it has really easy to follow recipes, unique and different dishes with amazing results! I’m a huge fan of one pot dishes, mainly because I hate washing up, and this book is crammed full of them! I first got to try the food cooked from the recipes in this book when I went to the Good Food Show in Birmingham. We were just having a normal day there wandering around the stalls and we came across, the Stewed stall. At the stall, they were selling their ready-made microwavable pots (that you can get in supermarkets) of food that is actually in this book. We got to try a sample of a few different stews ( the Beef in Ale was my favourite) and from then, we were hooked! We got to meet the author and bought a copy of the book (that he very nicely signed for us) which is something I love about the Good Food Show! As I loved the Beef in Ale when I tried it at the food show, that was the first meal I cooked from this book (for my boyfriend, on Valentines day, how romantic haha). The recipe couldn’t have been easier to follow, and the meal was one of the best things I’ve ever cooked. There are so many good stews and one pot dishes in this book, I would definitely recommend the Jambalaya and Hungarian Goulash! A favourite in my Mum’s house is the Ghanaian Peanut stew!! This is a must have for anyone that loves gorgeous homemade comfort food!
